MicroRNA research could change how we look at the foods we eat

As the New Year begins, many individuals will be trying to lose a few pounds and eat healthier, but few are aware of just how big of an impact our food choices really have. According to a recent article published in Scientific American, scientists at Nanjing University in China have recently conducted experiments with planet MicroRNA, binding substances that could play an enormous role in our physiology.

MicroRNAs are small substances that make up the building blocks of genetic material and can actually inform the function of cells and other receptors. The researchers followed 21 volunteers who were screened for microRNAs found in common crops like rice, wheat, cabbage and potatoes.

The scientists found that in one instance, a microRNA from a rice plant would actually inhibit the activity of a receptor that controlled the removal of LDL cholesterol. In the same ways that vitamins and minerals can help to support these normal functions, the materials found in these plants play more roles in the human body than we thought possible.
