Special strain of tomato given high concentrations of antioxidants by scientists

Oregon State University researchers recently launched a unique type of produce - the Indigo Rose tomato, which gets its purplish-blue color from antioxidants known as anthocyanins. This new breed is designed to be grown in home gardens and sold in supermarkets to provide consumers with high doses of nutrients that help combat the damaging effects of free radicals.

Anthocyanins are naturally found in blueberries and give the fruit the dark color they're known for, the New York Daily News reports. However, researchers note that tomatoes are consumed much more frequently than blueberries in the U.S., so they developed the Indigo Rose to increase the likelihood that individuals will access these antioxidants.

In order to ensure they receive the ideal amount of these free radical fighters, people can supplement their diet with Optimal Antioxidants pills from Clinician's Choice. While everyone should aim to eat several balanced meals throughout the day, it is often difficult to achieve the best antioxidant levels through diet alone.

As nutrient-meals increasingly become a priority for many, several "super foods" have been developed over the past few years. The source notes that a special type of broccoli that can help fight cancer debuted in the UK last year.
