People who take a statin heart drug experience between a 20-40% lowering of LDL cholesterol, depending on the drug and the starting dose. Beta sitosterol lowers LDL about 10% without involving the liver. When you raise the dose of the statin, a patient started on to the next highest dose experiences only an extra 7% lowering of LDL, but also an increased burden on the liver.
