(1) Research has shown that too much homocysteine in the blood is related to a higher risk of coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease. The folic acid and vitamins can help levels stay in a normal range, a condition necessary for a healthy heart. And a long-term study of more than 80,000 women suggests that intake of folate and vitamin B6 above the current recommended dietary allowance may be important in the primary prevention of coronary heart disease among adult females. (2) Folic acid and vitamin B12 complement each other in promoting a strong heart. In one clinical trial, folic acid lowered homocysteine levels by 25 percent and that the addition of vitamin B12 lowered levels another 7 percent. The B12 is taken in tablet form, which is easier to absorb than in foods because the vitamin does not have to be decoupled from the protein to which it is attached. Vitamin B12 is considered essential to producing healthy red blood cells, which are critical to a healthy heart. (3) Pernicious anemia is caused by a lack of vitamin B12 in the body. (4)

Cardio Guardian Plus also has a daily dosage 120 mg of Beta Sitosterol, along with 100 mg, or five times the daily value, of Niacin. Both contribute to having a healthy heart. Beta Sitosterol is a plant sterol that is naturally found in soybeans and wheat germ. Research shows that the compound blocks the intestinal absorption of cholesterol when taken with food.
